When Serena Williams joined Twitter back in 2009, she was considered an early adopter of the still nascent social media technology.
But while other celebrity athletes were still figuring out what these platforms were all about, Serena had already dived in with both feet and quickly established hers as a must-follow account.
Her hilarious posts and selfies have helped her amass a massive social media following—more than 15 million on Instagram and almost 11 million on Twitter to date—and she’s not afraid to use her platform to speak her mind or stand up for causes close to her heart.
“I think having that opportunity and that platform that we have, to be able to say things that we feel and speak up for social issues or things that aren’t right, or things that are right, good things and bad things, I think is really important,” Serena said in 2017.
“Now you just open up your phone and you can say something or you can post something, you can shoot a video," she added. "It can reach so many people and impact so many lives by just taking 10 seconds.”
Ahead of Serena’s upcoming farewell at the US Open, here is a collection of some of Serena’s best social media moments that prove she’s the GOAT on and off the court.
Star-studded Selfies
From Gigi Hadid to Selena Gomez, this Serena selfie stole the internet when she posted it in 2015.
Who can forget this iconic image? Serena and Roger Federer took this snap after sharing the doubles court when the United States faced Switzerland at the Hopman Cup in 2019.
Amid her second "Serena Slam" in 2015, the world No. 1 snapped one selfie with her Roland Garros trophies and a few weeks later, another with the Wimbledon trophy.
Climbing to the top of the WTA Tour? No sweat. Figuring out how to work a stroller? Now that's a completely different challenge.
I've conquered a lot of things... blood clots in my lungs- twice... knee and foot surgeries... winning grand slams being down match point... to name just a FEW but I found out by far the hardest is figuring out a stroller! 😰😰
In 2013, Serena had just three words after her Australian Open stunner at the hands of a 19-year-old Sloane Stephens, whose 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory snapped a 20-match winning streak for Serena.
She had even fewer words for Tennys Sandgren at the Australian Open, after some of his old, controversial social media posts resurfaced during the 2018 tournament.
Oh to be a fly on that wall. While rumors swirled about Serena's relationship with rapper Drake in 2015, she and Kim Kardashian posted this classic selfie to Instagram.
Her tweet in support of good friend Duchess Meghan Markle made headlines on both sides of the pond, amid Harry and Meghan's exit from the British royal family.
"I hope my image on this iconic orange box will inspire the next generation of girls and athletes to dream big," said Serena after finally getting her own Wheaties box.
Serena's hilarious tribute to her fellow "booty sibling" Rafael Nadal went viral in 2011, as she took a moment to highlight his assets during his victory in the Roland Garros final.
Wow Nadal and his booty is killing it! he's amazing.
