In the men's match, Alcaraz beat Paul in a resumption of their ATP Tour rivalry that's seen them split four career meetings, including a trio of three-setters.

But Alcaraz had no plans for a fourth in Mexico City, beating Paul 7-6(3), 6-3 and even wowing Iga Swiatek with a hot shot in the process. The Spaniard, who played the Acapulco tournament two years ago, made his second trip to Mexico and his first to the capital for the event.

Meanwhile on the women's side, adopted local Sakkari—who spoke tearfully about just how much she loves Mexico after winning the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara in September—beat Wozniacki 6-3, 6-4.

In addition to the great tennis, the jam-packed stadium was treated to a musical performance by Latin Grammy award winner Yatra, Alcaraz's good friend who also starred at the US Open this year.
