REPORT: Alexander Zverev issued penalty order for abusing ex, fined €450,000
The German's legal team called the procedure "scandalous" and is contesting the decision.
Alexander Zverev has reportedly been fined €450,000 ($475,832) by a German court after being issued a penalty order for an abuse claim made by ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea stemming from a May 2020 incident.
The Berlin public prosecutor’s office had sought the order against the reigning Olympic gold medalist and 2020 US Open finalist in July. In confirmation obtained by The Guardian that broke Tuesday evening, that order was issued on October 2.
Zverev previously “completely rejected” the allegations made by Patea, the mother of his daughter Mayla. The 26-year-old is contesting the order, with his lawyers describing the procedure as “scandalous.”
The total fine is the result of Zverev being handed down a 90-day daily rate of €5,000. Both the plaintiff and defendant will address the Tiergarten district court before a potential public trial commences.
Zverev is currently competing at the Paris Masters and is in line to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals as the No. 7-ranked player in the race to Turin. He won his opening singles match Tuesday over Marton Fucsovics, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and later lost in doubles alongside Marcelo Melo.
On January 31, the ATP closed its investigation into domestic violence accusations made by former girlfriend Olya Sharypova in October 2020, citing an inability to “substantiate” the claims of abuse.
