Anna Kalinskaya has become the first player to beat Iga Swiatek in straight sets in 343 days

Swiatek hadn’t lost a match in straight sets since falling to Elena Rybakina in the Indian Wells semifinals last March.

DUBAI HIGHLIGHTS: Anna Kalinskaya shocks Iga Swiatek in straight-set semifinal win3:10

Anna Kalinskaya shocked the tennis world with her upset of Iga Swiatek today—not only was Swiatek a perfect 7-0 in the Middle East swing so far, winning Doha last week and reaching the semifinals of Dubai this week, but she had gone 14-0 in sets in those matches, too.

And speaking of sets, Kalinskaya pulled off something even more rare with her 6-4, 6-4 victory over the world No. 1, becoming the first player to defeat Swiatek in straight sets in more than 11 months.

Swiatek's last straight-set loss had come to Elena Rybakina in the semifinals of Indian Wells last year, 6-2, 6-2. That was on Friday, March 17th, 2023—exactly 49 weeks ago, or 343 days.

And as if 343 days weren’t a long enough drought, there’s more…

Kalinskaya is the first qualifier to beat a WTA No. 1 in more than four years—or 1,506 days to be exact—since American Jennifer Brady defeated then-No. 1 Ashleigh Barty at Brisbane in 2020.

And having beaten No. 3-ranked Coco Gauff in the quarterfinals on Thursday, Kalinskaya is also the first qualifier to beat two WTA Top 3 players at a WTA event in over 25 years, since Amelie Mauresmo defeated Lindsay Davenport and Jana Novotna in Berlin in 1998.

She'll face Jasmine Paolini for the WTA 1000 title on Saturday.
