Aryna Sabalenka to surpass $20 million in career prize money after opening win at WTA Finals
She’ll be the 24th player in WTA history to reach that milestone, and just the second born in 1998 or later to do it.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka put on a dazzling display of power tennis in her opening match at the WTA Finals in Cancun on Sunday night, defeating No. 9-ranked Maria Sakkari by a 6-0, 6-1 scoreline.
Not only did she get some revenge with the 74-minute victory, having lost the pair’s only two previous meetings at the season-ending championships, but the win pushed her across a big milestone: Sabalenka will now surpass $20 million in career prize money.
She came into Cancun with $19,729,563 in career prize money, and she earned $326,000 with her opening win—a $128,000 participation fee for playing the match and $198,000 more for winning it.
Sabalenka will be the 24th player to surpass $20 million in WTA history, and just the second born in 1998 or later to do it after Iga Swiatek.
