Andrey Rublev found himself at the Citi Taste of Tennis searching for the answers that will boost him into an as-yet elusive Grand Slam breakthrough.

“I wish to know,” Rublev told Baseline. “My life would be easier [if I knew]. Trust me.”

Unfortunately for Rublev, that led to one of his eight quarterfinal losses. This year he was on the prowl for that next great piece of advice, perhaps finding words to live by thanks to former champion John McEnroe:

“Digest your food properly,” John McEnroe told Baseline when asked his recipe for Grand Slam success. “Because if it gets hot and you don’t digest, you’re in big trouble.”

Will Rublev be able to conquer this quarterfinal-grand-slam hurdle at the 2023 US Open? All signs point to yes—that is, so long as he takes small bites and plays one match at a time.
