2023 started strongly for Stefanos Tsitsipas. He went undefeated in singles play at the United Cup before reaching his second career Grand Slam final in Melbourne, losing to Novak Djokovic. Tsitsipas left Australia back at a career-high No. 3 ranking, and seemingly with a lot of momentum.
However, the rest of his season was rather uneven. He had solid results during the clay-court swing—a final in Barcelona, a semifinal in Rome—before a quarterfinal loss to Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros. It was around this time that Tsitsipas’s off-court relationship with WTA player, Paula Badosa, became public, and thereafter, frequent social media fodder. Coincidence or not, his on-court performance subsequently started to slide.
In his next 11 tournaments and a Davis Cup tie, Tsitsipas compiled a 10-11 record. Sandwiched in the middle was his only tournament title at a 250-level event in Los Cabos, Mexico, his lowest trophy haul since 2020.
Of note has been his struggles against his fellow Top 10, picking up his lone win in seven matches at his most recent tournament. And his ATP Return Rating—a compilation of first- and second-serve points won, return games won and break points converted—places the Greek outside the Top 50.
However, things improved for Tsitsipas this fall. Semifinal runs in his last three tournaments—Antwerp, Vienna and Paris—helped secure his spot in the ATP Finals. He finished the season with more than 50 match wins for the third consecutive year—300 for his career—matching Andrey Rubluv as the only players to hit that mark.
A positive showing in Turin for the 2019 champion will end his season as impressively as it began.
