ATP Finals Preview: David Goffin

Eight stars will battle in London at the ATP Finals starting on November 12. Baseline will preview each contender ahead of all the action.

The 2017 season has been big for David Goffin. He finally ended a three-year long title draught, broke into the Top 10 player for the first time, and qualified for the AT Tour Finals. He did play one round-robin match as an alternate in London last year, but now he’s ready to bring his feisty groundstrokes to the O2 Arena for real.

In Monte Carlo, Goffin peaked with an impressive pair of three-set wins over Dominic Thiem and Novak Djokovic. His run ended in the semifinals against eventual champion Rafael Nadal. But fans can appreciate his style in this sensational highlight against Djokovic:

Season Low

Unfortunately, Goffin’s momentum ended in the third round at the French Open. Up 5-4 in the first set, he twisted his ankle on a tarp when he tried to retrieve a deep. He retired and was unable to play the grass-court season, including Wimbledon.

Social Media Moment

In April, Goffin and Dominic Thiem showed their friendship in a feature for the ATP World Tour. They bantered about topics like who has the better backhand and volleys, and who is better dressed. Goffin, an underrated star, often doesn’t receive as much publicity as the Big Four or Next Gen players on tour.

Best Quote

In another ATP interview he talked about his favorite food. “Belgian fries because they are much better than the French.” Goffin might not have realized back in July that he was already stirring things up for the Davis Cup final against France later this month.

Goffin has been drawn into the Pete Sampras group with Nadal, Grigor Dimitrov and Thiem.
