Barty awarded third straight Newcombe Medal

It's been a year full of first-time accomplishments for Ashleigh Barty. The Aussie captured her maiden Grand Slam in Paris and she didn't stop there. She would follow it up title in Birmingham to grab hold of the No. 1 spot for the first time.

Then the 23-year-old’s season ended on the sweetest note when she defeated defending champion Elina Svitolina to hold the WTA Finals trophy.

She was honored as Australia's most outstanding tennis player, beating out candidates Dylan Alcott, Alex de Minaur, John Millman and Ajla Tomljanovic.

The prestigious medal has been awarded for 10 years and celebrates achievements and all areas of excellence within Australian tennis.

Barty's Fed Cup teammate Samantha Stosur was the first player to earn the medal three consecutive years, from 2010-2012.

"This is not about individual athletes — it’s a night of celebration for everyone involved in tennis and everyone that’s a part of our tennis family," Barty said. "Congratulations to everyone else who’s in this room. It takes a village and we are a big tennis family."

“I’m extremely fortunate to have such an amazing network around me. It’s very special to have mum, dad and my very first coach–Jim–here," Barty added.

Barty got to accept the award in front of her parents, Robert and Josie. 

Barty will be back in action next month as she attempts to capture her second Grand Slam title in front of her home crowd in Melbourne.
