Bencic battles the red stuff in Stuttgart opener
After falling in her Charleston opener last week against Paula Badosa in three sets, Belinda Bencic is sort of finding her footing on the red clay in Stuttgart. She claimed her first-round against 17 year-old Nastasja Schunk, 6-4, 6-2, on Monday but her toughest opponent appears to be the red stuff.
It wasn't all smooth sliding out on the court for Bencic, who fell multiple times and was covered in dirt by the end of her opening affair.
"Yay clay season has started," Bencic wrote with the rolling eyes emoji.
In all fairness, this was Bencic's first match on the red dirt and the clay-court swing is just kicking off. After one point, she perfected the slide but unfortunately the net was directly in front of her. It made for the most awkward of collisions, to say the least.
Bencic will take the court again against Ekaterina Alexandrova, and hopefully will avoid being covered in dirt.
