Serena Williams' return to tennis—following her life-threatening childbirth—took place in multiple stages: at the exhibition in Abu Dhabi, in Fed Cup doubles in Asheville and in singles competition in Indian Wells.

But Williams was really undeniably back when she showed up to play the French Open in a catsuit.

Serena had gone just 2-2 on the spring hard courts, and she hadn't played any clay lead-up tournaments at all. With that in mind, no one outside the Serena camp knew what to expect from her in Paris.

But, to widespread acclaim, Williams came out in her catsuit and won her first-round match against Kristyna Pliskova, 7-6 (4), 6-4. She'd then rack up two Top 20 wins, before withdrawing ahead of her fourth-rounder versus Maria Sharapova.

Of course, the French Tennis Federation later said it would ban the catsuit, and Williams went on to make the finals of the remaining two majors.

As for the dress code, Williams shook it off, saying, "When it comes to fashion, you don't want to be a repeat offender."
