Cilic falls apart mid-match against Federer
The 28-year-old broke down in the Wimbledon final.
On the biggest stage in the world, Marin Cilic lost his composure. As trainers treated him for what would appear to be a left foot injury, the Croatian let his emotions get to him, while down 6-3, 3-0. Federer would continue his ruthless dominance, sealing his eighth Wimbledon crown, 6-3, 6-1, 6-4.
The world certainly noticed Cilic's struggles, with reactions ranging from sympathy to critique:
Cilic was seeking his second major after the 2014 US Open, while Federer now has a record 19.
"That’s what I did throughout my entire career, [I] never gave up. that was my idea for today," an emotional Cilic said after the match. "I gave my best. That’s all I could do.
"I had an amazing journey here. I played the best tennis of my life…"
Federer sympathized for Cilic:
"It is cruel sometimes but he fought well and he’s a hero..." Federer said. "This is such a special occasion to be in the final."
