Coric, Cilic cap dream week for Croatian sports

A great week in Croatian sports got even better over the weekend.

If it wasn’t enough that Croatia crushed Lionel Messi and Argentina 3-0 in World Cup group play, its top-ranked tennis stars took home big trophies just days later.

Borna Coric notched the biggest win of his young career, and his second career ATP title, by beating Roger Federer 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-2 in the Halle final.

Across the English Channel, in London, Marin Cilic fought off two match points and survived a mini-break in the second-set tiebreak to beat Novak Djokovic for his second Queen’s Club title, 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3.

Cilic, now No. 5 in the world, played aggressively from the first ball, even after losing the first set. He looked every bit the Wimbledon contender as he aims to return to the stage where he lost to Federer in the final last year.

Wimbledon starts on next Monday, while Croatia takes on Iceland on Tuesday.
