Dabrowski becomes first Canadian WTA Grand Slam champion

Dabrowski won the French Open mixed title with Rohan Bopanna.

The women's side of the French Open has been a history making affair. First, Jelena Ostapenko became聽the first Latvian player to reach the semifinals, and then the final, of a Grand Slam in singles. Now,聽 Garbiela Dabrowski has become the first Canadian female player to win a major, taking the mixed doubles title with Rohan Bopanna.

鈥淚t鈥檚 something that you always dream about as a kid. It鈥檚 kind of funny, because you never know where the journey is going to take you: singles, doubles, now mixed doubles," Dabrowski said. "I couldn鈥檛 be more happy. Yeah, it feels amazing."

While she hasn't reached the same height in singles, Dabrowski is enjoying聽the doubles experience fully.

"I discovered the last few years, and when I was younger in the juniors, that doubles was a lot more fun," she said. "And now, for me, doubles pays the bills, and gives me a better life."

The 25-year-old pocked $80,000 for her efforts in Paris. She is ranked No. 20 in doubles, and No. 281 in singles.
