Dimitrov seals ATP Finals title with flair

Grigor Dimitrov is the king of London after sweeping five matches at the ATP finals—during his debut, no less. The new world No. 3 defeated David Goffin in a hotly contested final to win the biggest title of his career, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

It was a triumphant comeback for the Bulgarian after a mid-year slump had left many wondering if he would ever rise to the occasion at the biggest moments.

But an August title in Cincinnati and the year-end tournament trophy has spurred him to the best season on the tour outside of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

On Wednesday, Dimitrov had mowed through Goffin 6-0, 6-2, but the Sunday final was a thriller with plenty of stunning shots. At 4-4 and 15-15, DImitrov stretches for lunging forehand save that set up a perfect volley:

At 5-3 in the second set, Goffin and Dimitrov put on a show, each player reaching back for extraordinary shots. Dimitrov got in the final blows to win the game, but Goffin leveled the match one game later.

Late in the third set, Dimitrov scrambled forward to turn Goffin’s dropshot into a crosscourt lob winner. TV commentator Robbie Koenig said Dimitrov’s was “playing at galactic levels.”

Soon after, Dimitrov won it all. He fell to the ground and sobbed before getting up to hug Goffin.

Dimitrov claims the biggest non-major trophy of 2017 and he will be confident threat to win a major title in 2018.

"This makes me even more locked in, more excited about my work, and for what's to come," Dimitrov said. "It's a great platform for me to build on for next year. It's going to be amazing in the off-season. I know what I have to do in order to do good."
