Doubles Take: Eastbourne and Antalya
The last champions before Wimbledon will look to keep their momen
Doubles Take looks at the players making their final push before Wimbledon.
WINNING WITH STYLE IN EASTBOURNE
In the final of the Surbiton Challenger, which kicked off the ATP’s grass-court season, Jonny O’Mara was a shot-making machine as he and his partner Luke Bambridge beat brothers Neal and Ken Skupski for their first pro title together.
Fast-forward three weeks later and the two teams met again in the final of the Eastbourne, England, tournament—with the same result.
O’Mara and Bambridge each won their first main-draw title, as they rallied from an early deficit in the first set to take the match 7-5, 6-4. It was the first all-British ATP World Tour final in six years.
On the women’s side, Gabriela Dabrowski and Yifan Xu—who’ve established themselves among the tour’s elite—captured their second title of the season with a straight-sets win over Romanians Irina-Camelia Begu and Mihaela Buzarnescu in the final.
The winning duo will be seeded No. 6 at Wimbledon.
TAKING FLIGHT
In Antalya, Turkey, the unseeded duo of Santiago Gonzalez and Marcelo Demoliner won their first title together, defeating the number-three seeds Sander Arends and Matwe Middelkoop in the final, 7-5, 6-7 (6), 10-8.
It’s Demoliner’s first career title in his seventh final, while Gonzalez won his 12th. Arends and Middelkoop fought off a match point in the second set, but in the match tiebreak, Demoliner and Gonzalez secured three mini-breaks to help them clinch the win.
