Emma Navarro vs. Dayana Yastremska: Match Preview

This will be a battle between two pure, but very different, ball-strikers.

Yastremska, despite her thin frame, is a slugger in the extreme. She has never met a ball she didn’t want to pulverize, and when she makes clean contact, it usually doesn’t come back.

Navarro doesn’t have Yastremska’s winner-creating pace, but she can do more things with her racquet. She’s equally adept at slice, high topspin, and the drop shot, and likes to blend offense and defense.

They’ve played once, at the Australian Open in 2024, and Yastremska won in three sets. That was the start of her first and so far only run to a Slam semifinal. But it was Navarro who would go on to have the breakout season, reaching a high of No. 8, and making her own major-semi run at the US Open.

Navarro is still ranked 11th, 24 spots above Yastremska, but the American has come down to earth in 2025. She’s 25-18 overall, and has struggled to maintain her form for more than a match or two at a time. Yastremska is what she has always been: Terminally streaky. But she has been on a decent streak of late, beating Coco Gauff at Wimbledon and making the semis in Hamburg. If—and it’s always a big if with Yastremska—she can stay in that zone, and at that level, she can beat the 2025 version of Navarro. Winner: Yastremska
