Former world No. 20 Guido Pella is retiring from professional tennis.

The 33-year-old shared his decision in a lengthy Instagram post on Friday evening.

“It was an amazing journey, with a lot of nice things that allowed me to live moments that not everyone can and for that I will be eternally grateful,” Pella said in a translation.

“As the person I admire most in my life says, ‘All our dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them.’ I think I was able to fulfill just about everything I set out in tennis, and now it will be time to look for them elsewhere.”

Pella notably contributed to Argentina’s maiden Davis Cup triumph in 2016. The left-hander posted singles wins during the first round and semifinals against Poland and Great Britain, and teamed up with Juan Martin del Potro to win a five-set doubles contest in the quarterfinals over Italy that year.

His best major result was well earned. At 2019 Wimbledon, Pella advanced to the quarterfinals by ousting reigning finalist Kevin Anderson in the third round and stunning 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic from two sets down in the round of 16. The previous year at the All England Club, Pella took out 2017 finalist Marin Cilic in the second round in another two-set comeback.

An ongoing right knee injury sidelined Pella from October 2021 until November 2022. He wraps his career with a 128-151 record in tour-level matches and four Top 10 victories.

Pella’s final win came in the first round of Hamburg against Thiago Monteiro and he played his farewell match against Lloyd Harris in the first round of the US Open.
