Fast facts from Sonego's Vienna upset of Djokovic



In one of the most shocking upsets in recent history, lucky loser ousted world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in Vienna, 6-2, 6-1.

"Yes, clinching the No. 1 had an effect on me today," Djokovic said. "I’ve done what I came here for, securing the No. 1. And I move completely fine with today’s result. I'm healthy and looking forward to a strong finish in London."

Here are the top facts to know from the unexpected result:

Lorenzo lost in qualifying to Aljaz Bedene and would end up one of three lucky losers in the main draw. He then took out Dusan Lajovic and Hubert Hurkacz, both in straight sets, before his showdown with Djokovic on Friday.

The Italian is ranked No. 42, which happens to be his career-high, and has had average results since the ATP tour restarted in August. He lost in three first rounds and reached the second round in Rome and Sardinia but appeared in the round of 16 at Roland Garros.

The 25-year-old is the first lucky loser to beat Djokovic ever, and the first time Djokovic has lost to a player outside of the Top 40 since he lost to a world No. 72-ranked Marco Cecchinato at Roland Garros in 2018.

In his first career meeting against Djokovic, Sonego became the first Italian to defeat a world No. 1 since Fabio Fognini took out Andy Murray in Rome in 2017.
