Dominic Thiem turned 24 on Sunday, and celebrated with his team members and friends at the popular Manhattan restaurant Nobu. Thiem was joined in celebration by his possible next opponent, Roger Federer. The fortnight's youngest sensation Denis Shapovalov was also present for the festivities.

But instead of setting up a blockbuster quarterfinal with Federer, Thiem failed to close his Monday match over Juan Martin del Potro. After plenty of drama and cheers from a pro-Argentinian Grand Stand crowd, Thiem fell, 1-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

"Of course the crowd was on his side. But it was a great atmosphere," Thiem said. "We're not playing every day in an atmosphere like this. I was enjoying it actually. The crowd was not unfair at all."

Federer advanced with a straight-sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber, and will get Del Potro next.
