Five facts to know about Barty's Roland Garros win



Ashleigh Barty made history on Saturday by winning the Roland Garros title over Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova, 6-1, 6-3. The win puts the No. 8-seeded Barty in some elite company as an Australian Grand Slam singles champion—she won the US Open doubles crown last year.

Here are five facts to know:

She's the first Australian to win Roland Garros since Margaret Court in 1973.

The 23-year-old is the first Australian Grand Slam champion since Samantha Stosur won the US Open in 2011.

Her ranking will rise to No. 2 on Monday, making her the highest-ranked Australian female since Evonne Goolagong in 1976.

Three years ago, Barty re-entered the WTA rankings at No. 623 after taking a break from the game for 18 months. She would crack the Top 20 the following year in 2017.

Roland Garros is Barty's fifth career title. She won the Miami earlier this year, as well as Nottingham and Zhuhai last year, and Kuala Lumpur in 2017.
