Fabio Fognini put forth his best effort at the China Open against Alexander Zverev, put it wouldn't be enough. Their best point had it all: a high backhand smash, a perfect lob, a skilled tweener, a drop volley and finally, a putaway volley.
Fognini would win that battle, but not the match as his 20-year-old foe prevailed 6-4, 6-2. Next, Zverev will get to do something rare: play someone younger than him. He faces 19-year-old Andrey Rublev for a spot in the semifinals.
