Frances Tiafoe vs. Alex de Minaur: Match Preview

The American and the Australian are 27 and 26, respectively. They both turned pro in 2015. And they’ve been near each other in the rankings for most of this decade. At the moment, De Minaur is No. 8 and Tiafoe No. 12, but that could easily be reversed in a couple of months.

Yet they’ve only played three times, and their most recent meeting was in 2022. Tiafoe won that, on indoor hard courts in Paris, while De Minaur won the other two, also on hard courts.

MATCH POINT: Alex de Minaur escapes Alejandro Davidovich Fokina for Washington title0:46

The lack of matches between them is kind of a shame, because these two could have a lively rivalry. Each is a crowd-pleaser in his own way. Tiafoe likes to engage the audience, and looks for shots that will get them on their feet. De Minaur, by comparison, keeps his head down and lets his legs do the talking. But watching him scramble from sideline to sideline is entertaining in itself. Tiafoe gives you the shot-making, while De Minaur gives you the running and the intensity.

De Minaur has had the better year. He’s 37-13 compared to Tiafoe’s 22-16. He also should be riding a wave of confidence after winning the Citi Open title last week. But it hasn’t been all bad news for Tiafoe in 2025. Along with Tommy Paul, he became the first American man to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros since 2003.

Tiafoe will—or should—look to attack, keep the points short, and use his touch to force De Minaur to cover all four corners of the court. The problem is, De Minaur is very good at covering those four corners. I think the Aussie may be one great get better than the American in this one. Winner: De Minaur
