French Open Getaway: Le March des Enfants Rouges

Explore the tastes of Paris at this local market.

Le Marche des Enfats Rougues, the oldest covered market in Paris, was founded in 1615 by two war commissioners of Louis XIII.

The market is nestled behind an inconspicuous green-metal gate.

Inside, you'll find a glorious maze of 20-plus food stalls selling ready-to-eat dishes from all over the globe (Moroccan couscous, Japanese bento boxes and much more). It's a great place to come for a stroll or to dine with locals at communal tables.

In English, the name translates to “Market of the Red Children," a reference to the children clothed in red, who lived in a nearby orphanage. The color red signified charity.

In the 1990s, the market was almost shut down and turned into a parking lot, but local protests led to the it reopening in 2000.
