Gabriela Sabatini among packed crowd in Buenos Aires to watch Carlos Alcaraz’s comeback match
The 1990 US Open champion watched the 2022 US Open champion battle to a three-set win over Laslo Djere.
Carlos Alcaraz played (and won) his first match since November in Buenos Aires on Wednesday night, but he wasn’t the only one drawing attention out there.
Among the packed crowd at Court Guillermo Vilas were several Argentinian tennis legends, including the queen of Argentinian tennis, Gabriela Sabatini:
In his post-match press conference, Alcaraz was asked about playing in front of the 1990 US Open champion:
Sabatini is the only Argentinian woman to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era—she’s also the highest-ranked player from Argentina in WTA rankings history, spending time at No. 3 across five different years (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993).
Also in the stands were former ATP players Guillermo Coria and Juan Monaco, both former champions at the ATP event in Buenos Aires (Coria in 2004 and Monaco in 2007). Coria went as high as No. 3 on the ATP rankings, Monaco No. 10.
Alcaraz, who’s playing in Argentina for the first time in his career, will play his quarterfinal match on Friday.
