Garbiñe Muguruza returns to the WTA Tour this week in Madrid, having withdrawn from Miami and Charleston with a shoulder injury.

The two-time Grand Slam champion has not played since an opening-round defeat at Indian Wells, but says she is now recovered.

"It was a lot of work with the physio because there was a problem with the tendon," she told press before the start of the Madrid Open. "It's normal for tennis players but it requires rest."

Muguruza says the break could help her the rest of the season, though she's not as match-tough as she would like going into the tournament.

"I have come back fresh and eager," the 28-year-old said. "For sure, having not competed as much you notice it when you go to play, but I'm glad I made that decision. My body needed it."

Playing at home is also a motivation for the former world No. 1. While the high altitude could be seen as an advantage for her big-hitting game, she is yet to advance beyond the third round. Muguruza missed last year's edition as a result of a left thigh issue.

"I would be delighted to produce my best tennis in Madrid and every year I come with that mentality," she said. "Madrid has always placed pressure on me because it's a very important tournament for me. It's the only [big] tournament we got in Spain.''

Muguruza, currently ranked No. 9, opens with Ajla Tomljanovic.
