In Gstaad, Hamad Medjedovic gets the better of Dominic Thiem again
The Serbian and fellow qualifier Zizou Bergs reached maiden ATP quarterfinals on Wednesday.
In May, Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic took down Dominic Thiem en route to winning his second ATP Challenger Tour title of the year at Mauthausen. On Wednesday, Medjedovic bested the two-time Roland Garros finalist on clay again to reach his maiden ATP quarterfinal.
Having come through qualifying at the Swiss Open Gstaad, the world No. 183 advanced past Thiem, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, overcoming nine double faults. Thiem, the 2015 champion, won six more points on the day—but he couldn’t capitalize on any of the four break point chances held in the final game to fall after two hours and 15 minutes.
Medjedovic, who celebrated his 20th birthday on Tuesday, won 18 of 24 points against the Austrian’s second serve. He awaits the winner of an all-German encounter between fourth seed Yannick Hanfmann and Daniel Altmaier.
Thiem dropped to 8-16 on the season in tour-level matches.
Zizou Bergs battled past Jurij Rodionov, 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-6 (4), in a meeting between qualifiers at the ATP 250. Bergs saved two set points in the opening tie-break and claimed the final four points of the decisive tiebreaker. The 24-year-old split a pair of Challenger contests on the grass with Rodionov in June.
Like Medjedovic, Bergs is through to the last eight of an ATP tournament for the first time. The Belgian next meets second seed Miomir Kecmanovic or wild card Dominic Stricker.
