Iga Swiatek named European Sportsperson of the Year

The WTA No. 1 beat out the likes of second-placed Armand Duplantis and third-placed Max Verstappen in a survey of 20 news agencies.

Iga Swiatek has been named the European Sportsperson of the Year, topping a survey of 20 news agencies done by Poland's Press Agency.

Among those polled, the 21-year-old Swiatek received 118 votes, ten more than second-placed pole vault champion Armand "Mondo" Duplantis and 36 more than third-placed F1 champ Max Verstappen. There were 58 athletes nominated, representing 19 sports.

Prior to Swiatek, three athletes from Poland had previously won the award.

It is the second year in a row a tennis player has won the award, following Novak Djokovic's win in 2021, and the 16th time a tennis player has been named European Sportsperson of the Year.

Swiatek had a stellar 2022 season, reaching No. 1 in the world, capturing two majors among her eight tour-level titles, and winning 37 matches in a row.

Among other accolades, Swiatek was named the WTA's player of the season and ITF World Champion.
