The world loves Rafael Nadal, but the collective tennis fanbase also clings to an underdog story, so the battle between the Spaniard and first time major finalist Kevin Anderson was a popular one. However, as most guessed, Nadal swept aside the South African in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
His third US Open title and 16th Grand Slam title overall, Nadal has made 2017 a blast from the past, as he and Roger Federer have split the Slams, two each.
The 31-year-old was a favorite going in, but overcame many hurdles, including the dangerous Juan Martin del Potro in the semifinals. He didn't face a break point in the final.
