Just like Gael Monfils, Elina Svitolina has taken out the world No. 4 at the Australian Open

A few hours after Monfils upset ATP No. 4 Taylor Fritz, Svitolina defeated WTA No. 4 Jasmine Paolini.

Gael Monfils and Elina Svitolina, two of the most accomplished players in tennis and one of the sport’s most prominent married couples, have taken out both of the world No. 4s on the same day, at the same event, in the same round—even on the same court.

They both came back from a set down to do it, too.

Monfils was first up, battling past ATP No. 4 Taylor Fritz during the afternoon session on Margaret Court Arena, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (1), 6-4.

It was the biggest win of the Frenchman's career at a Grand Slam tournament by ranking, his first over a Top 4 player.

Just a few hours later, Svitolina mirrored her husband’s achievement, fighting past WTA No. 4 Jasmine Paolini during the Margaret Court Arena night session, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

It was the milestone 40th Top 10 win of her career, and her fifth since returning to the tour as a mother in 2023.

Svitolina got the first break of the match in the third game for a 2-1 lead, but got broken right back—and actually ended up losing the next five games in a row to drop the first set after just 30 minutes.

She started out exactly the same way in the second set, breaking Paolini for a 2-1 lead, but this time she held onto that break until the end, eventually serving out a 52-minute second set.

From there the floodgates opened and Svitolina was in complete control, ripping through the third set at love in just 25 minutes, with only one of the six games even going to deuce.

She hit 13 winners to just three unforced errors in the decider.

In the end, it was another fantastic victory for the Ukrainian, particularly as she’s playing her first tournament since undergoing foot surgery after the US Open last September—this was only her third match back after that four-month injury lay-off.
