Kenin reads thank you note to Billie Jean King

"Thank you for showing all women just how valuable we are and that our equality is worth fighting for," Sofia Kenin said.

The 21-year-old American sat down with crusader of social justice Billie Jean King to read her a thank you note for all she's done for women and the sport.

Kenin, who recently captured her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, is grateful for the doors King knocked down.

In 1970, King took a stand against inequality, joining eight other women to sign $1 contracts to begin the first women's tour. It was a risk, as the group received letters of suspension and faced never competing at Wimbledon again, but they stood strong.

The Original 9 cared about three things: (1) Any women who is good enough should have a place to compete, (2) be appreciated for her accomplishments not looks, and (3) be able to make a living. These three concepts are still alive and continuing to improve with each passing year.

"I would love to inspire girls, women and the next generation," said Kenin, after reading the thank you letter.

King was quick to say, "You're already doing that by your tennis just performing and watching you."

And it's true, the American had a dream that started when she was just a little girl and her intensity, passion and commitment is showing the next generation that they can achieve their goals if they want it bad enough.

"I don't want to take things for granted, but I'm excited for what the future will hold for me," Kenin said.

All that Kenin wanted last year was to break into the Top 20, and she finished at No. 12. Now, with a world No. 4 ranking next to her name, the Lyon champion has bigger goals, and will be chasing the No. 1 spot in 2020.
