Keys wins new Volvo and first clay title in Charleston
On Sunday, Madison Keys emerged victorious at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston. The American took out Caroline Wozniacki in the final for her fourth career title, first on clay and first since 2017.
Her week was a welcome turnaround after losing her opening rounds at both Indian Wells and Miami. The Premier event was stacked, and Keys had to get her first career wins over Sloane Stephens and Wozniacki.
"I have to play 100 percent believing in my game even if I'm not making every single one," Keys said. "If I'm doing the right thing and I have the right intention then eventually things will go in the right direction."
Keys enjoyed her time in Charleston, but was brutally honest about where she most wants to be: home.
She gets a transportation upgrade as the champion is given a new Volvo, customized to their preferences and specifications. Luckily, her new home in Lake Nona, Fla. is well equipped to hold all of her prizes from Charleston.
"I've also never won a car so this is great," Keys said. "I'll have to keep doing this."
She's the ninth American to win in Charleston joining Rosie Casals, Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, Martina Navratilova, Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Sloane Stephens.
"That means the world to me," Keys said. "To be able to win such a big title like this especially my fist one on clay means so much."
The 24-year-old rose a few spots in the rankings as well to No. 14.
