Miami Day 3 previews: Nishikori vs. Ofner, Evans vs. Sonego, Mertens vs. Townsend

Kei Nishikori vs. Sebastian Ofner
Nishikori is making his way back onto the scene following a string of injuries. The former world No. 4 is set to appear at a Masters 1000 event for the first time since 2021 in his season debut. His Austrian competitor, on the other hand, comes into Miami with 14 matches under his belt for the year (6-8). Ofner has gained experience and confidence in cracking the Top 40. Will Nishikori’s extensive background on tour be able to withstand the up and comer on the block? Winner: Ofner
Lorenzo Sonego vs. Daniel Evans
These Top 50 competitors have faced off three times, with the Italian prevailing on each occasion that includes a three-set win on these very courts last year. They squared off earlier this season in the first round of the Australian Open, with Sonego advancing in four sets. Coming into this match, both are eager to ignite a momentum shift—for the two are a combined 6-14 in 2024. Winner: Sonego
Taylor Townsend vs. Elise Mertens
There are more similarities than differences between these two players, making for an exciting second-round match. They’ve spent nearly the same amount of time on tour, competing since 2012 and 2013, respectively. Both bring successful doubles play to the table, so it would be no surprise to see either work their way forward. While Mertens has reached a singles career-high ranking of No. 12, Townsend should not be counted out in what could be a first-time meeting for the books. Winner: Townsend
