Mirra Andreeva vs. Bianca Andreescu: Match Preview

Six years ago, Andreescu was in Andreeva’s shoes. She was the teenage sensation who won a WTA 1000 at Indian Wells in the spring, and was looking for another in Canada. She was the one who went on to beat (an injured) Serena Williams in that final, and again in the US Open final a few weeks later.

Now it’s Andreeva’s turn to try to follow in all of those footsteps. She also won at Indian Wells this spring, and she has looked like a potential major winner since. Or she did. Since Indian Wells, the 18-year-old Russian has hit a plateau. Instead of a title contender, she has become a perennial quarterfinalist—she has reached five, and lost them all.

Still, making the quarters at Roland Garros and Wimbledon at 18 is hardly a sign of problems ahead. Like a lot of other teens, Andreeva has had trouble controlling her emotions, and opponents were bound to figure out ways to frustrate her. Can Andreescu drive her young opponent around the bend as well? Her highly vocal, highly dramatic style has rubbed a few opponents the wrong way over the years.

More important, of course, is how their games will mesh, or clash, in their first meeting. Both are solid with their backhands, and like to throw in slice forehands to disrupt. Andreescu is a natural attacker, while the rangy Andreeva can win with defense. Andreescu is coming off a good, gritty victory over Barbora Krejcikova, but she also rolled her ankle at the end.

If she’s fit, and feeling the home crowd, this should be a good one. Winner: Andreescu
