Note to USTA **It’s a gray, rainy morning in Melbourne; makes you realize how wise it was of the Aussies to build not one but two stadia with retractable roofs (the Big House, Rod Laver Arena, and Vodafone Arena). The show will go on, just a little something to think about for the folks who love to bill the U.S. Open as the biggest—and best—Grand Slam.

It’s been a whirlwind tour for me; arrived with a fried brain on Thursday morning, got busy posting messages in this new Weblog format (I’m liking this), and now the tournament is almost over, just as I’m beginning to get comfortable–and at least somewhat caught up.

My only regret is that I haven’t been able to get around the outside courts and facilities more, to file posts with a little more local color, intrigue and all-around Grand Slam whackiness. Next time, I guess–if there is a next time for TennisWorld.

Note to T-Mobile Users **If you’re going abroad and want to activate your worldwide roaming feature, don’t take any of what the support desk may tell you as gospel truth. They cavalierly claimed that they had me up and running for international calling after a three-minute telephone exchange and a few pushed buttons on my Nokia phone, but when I got here I found that nothing works.

I’ve been calling my wife and others collect from various pay phones; the only word my 26-month old son, Luke, has said to me so far has been “football.”

At least he’s got his priorities straight. I’ll be home soon to watch the Super Bowl with you, cowboy!
