By the Letter

T...ravel takes precedence; no "letters" this week.

McGrogan's Heroes

ATP - Rafael Nadal

Gilles Simon, Nicolas Kiefer, and Andy Murray all played well in Toronto, and each has a backstory worth reading about.  Simon is the hot new kid on the block, Kiefer is the veteran making a final push in his career, and Murray is starting to live up to all the talk lauded on him.  But without a doubt, the lead story is that Nadal has made a seamless adjustment from clay to grass to hard courts, looking simply dominant in the process this week.  He's been monopolizing the ATP Tour lately, as well as the McGrogan's Hero award.

WTA - Dinara Safina

Dinara did her fans proud by winning her second title of the year, this time on the hard courts of Los Angeles.  She also probably made many WTA fans proud, unless they are ardent supporters of Jelena Jankovic.  Had Jankovic defeated Safina in the semifinals, Jelena would have become - by computer determination only, I may add - the number one ranked player in the world.  Trends have been tough to uncover in the women's game lately; having a No. 1 player without a Grand Slam title to her credit would have made for even more head scratching.

Tennis Theatre

For those of you who missed it, this is Nadal's epic first set tiebreaker with Richard Gasquet in the Toronto quarterfinals:
