McGrogan's Heroes

We don't often touch on golf -- that other sport -- in these parts, but I'm making an exception this week. Tom Watson was an eight-foot putt away from winning the British Open at age 59; he ended up finishing second to 36-year-old Stewart Cink. If Watson -- really, the hero this week -- had won, he would have taken home Claret Jugs in three decades: the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 2000s.

In honor of Watson's still-astounding accomplishment, my paeans to this week's tennis heroes will be limited to 59 words or less.

ATP - Jeremy Chardy

Tennis aficionados have talked about Chardy for some time, and the 22-year-old won his first ATP title last week in Stuttgart. He beat Jose Acasuso and Martin Vassallo Arguello -- two fine clay-courters -- early on, then handled the tricky Nicolas Kiefer in straights. Finally, Chardy came back from a set down to beat Victor Hanescu in the final.

WTA - Sybille Bammer

Bammer won her first title since 2007 last week in Prague, beating top seed Francesca Schiavone in the final. The Austrian mother’s toughest test came in the quarterfinals against Lucie Hradecka; Bammer survived in three tough sets, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. In the semifinals, Bammer served third-seeded Iveta Benesova a bagel early on and won 6-0, 7-5.
