Mylan WTT: 72 Hours (7/20-7/22)

Boston overcomes San Diego in a rain-delayed, drama-filled saga.

YESTERDAY (July 20)

Boston Lobsters d. SAN DIEGO AVIATORS 20-19

Playing without mid-season addition Tim Smyczek (replacing the first substitute Alex Kuznetsov), Lobsters coach (and former Top 15 player) Jan-Michael Gambill stepped in to lead his team to a 20-19 victory over the San Diego Aviators. Postponed from Sunday night due to inclement weather, the match began when Gambill partnered with Scott Lipsky to set the tone for Boston, edging Raven Klaasen and Taylor Fritz in men’s doubles. Losing the next two sets, the Lobsters trailed 14-10 at halftime before Arantxa Parra Santonja stepped in to star in the two events. Pairing with Irina Falconi and later Lipsky in mixed doubles, Parra Santonja went 10-5 on Monday to ease past the Aviators and stay within spitting distance of the Washington Kastles.

Live Stream of the Day: PHILADELPHIA FREEDOMS d. Washington Kastles 18-16

After two tough losses to the four-time defending champions, the Philadelphia Freedoms finally earned a win over the Washington Kastles, delighting home fans all the way to an 18-16 victory. The Freedoms had been on a six-match losing streak heading into Monday night, but Taylor Townsend appeared reborn at the Villanova University Pavilion, taking out Madison Brengle in women’s singles and later partnering reigning French Open men’s doubles champion Marcelo Melo to oust Leander Paes and Anastasia Rodionova, 5-1 in each set. The Freedoms have a day off before meeting the Boston Lobsters at the Manchester Athletic Club; might they parlay the momentum into a second-straight Eastern Conference Championship appearance?

Austin Aces d. SAN DIEGO AVIATORS 24-17

The Top 2 Western Conference teams met at the Omni La Costa Resort Monday night. San Diego, forced to play a second match, were dispatched by the Aces, who bring their win/loss total to an astonishing 7-0. Barring a hiccup in women’s singles, when Nicole Gibbs failed to convert on a 4-1 lead over Chani Scheepers, Austin remained in control throughout the five sets with Teymuraz Gabashvili and Alla Kudryavtseva stepping up to put in the final blows in mixed doubles.
