Nick Kyrgios to face assault charge in Canberra court next month after allegation made by ex-girlfriend
Set to play in the Wimbledon quarterfinals Wednesday, the Australian is reportedly taking “the allegation very seriously.”
Nick Kyrgios is due to appear in a Canberra court next month to face an assault charge.
The hearing is linked with an allegation that Kyrgios "grabbed" ex-girlfriend Chiara Passari, reports The Canberra Times.
"ACT Policing can confirm a 27-year-old Watson man is scheduled to face the ACT Magistrates Court on the 2nd of August in relation to one charge of common assault following an incident in December 2021," a police statement read Tuesday.
Kyrgios, who plays Cristian Garin in the Wimbledon quarterfinals Wednesday, is taking “the allegation very seriously”, according to Barrister Jason Moffett. Kyrgios faces a maximum two-year jail sentence if found guilty.
“Given the matter is before the court ... he doesn't have a comment at this stage, but in the fullness of time we'll issue a media release,” said Moffett.
Later, a statement from Kyrgios' legal statement declared, "At the present time, the allegations are not considered as fact by the Court, and Mr. Kyrgios is not considered charged with an offense until the First Appearance."
The former couple were previously separated by police at their Adelaide quarantine hotel in October 2021 after returning from the Boston-hosted Laver Cup. Following an investigation into the argument, Kyrgios and Passari stayed in different rooms for the duration.
