Garbine Muguruza and Tomljanovic both won 75 total points, but the Croatian born Australian won the important ones in her three-set upset.
Ajla Tomljanović continued her successful season with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, upset win over Garbiñe Muguruza on Saturday.
The Croatian born Australian was simply better than the two-time major champion, outlasting her from the ground with her exceptional two-handed backhand.
It was the first Top 10 win of the season for the Aussie, who will face Tamara Zidansek in the third round. Tomjlanovic's boyfriend Matteo Berrettini has yet to play his first match of the tournament.
