While many American men were deserving of the nod on Wednesday, Danielle Collins' dominant performance after undergoing surgery is simply top-notch.
Danielle Collins is a tough cookie. Two months after undergoing surgery for endometriosis—a condition where tissues similar to the tissues inside a uterus begin growing outside the uterus— the American picked up right where she left off and then some.
Collins pummeled Anhelina Kalinina, 6-0, 6-2, to reach the third round of Roland Garros for the second straight year. A phenomenal turnaround when considering she unknowingly competed with a cyst “the size of a tennis ball” inside her body.
Collins skipped the clay court season entirely to recover and rehab for Roland Garros, making her dominant win over Kalinina— who rode a 15-match win streak into the match— all the more impressive. We all knew the two-time National Champion for the Virginia Cavaliers was built a little different, but after today, we must admit no matter how tough we think we are, Collins is tougher.
