Player of the day: Djokovic dominates into final eight
Novak Djokovic had his first real test in his Roland Garros fourth round against No. 15 seed Karen Khachanov and the Serbian passed with flying colors. In two hours and 26 minutes, he fired off a laser crosscourt forehand to seal the deal, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
The world No. 1 took every opportunity to step into the court and take control of points, winning 66 percent of his points at net and striking 44 winners. Monday's win marks the 17-time Grand Slam champion's 11th quarterfinal showing in Paris.
Djokovic has been absolutely dominant since the return of professional tennis. Although the 33-year-old was defaulted from last month's US Open due to hitting a linesperson with a ball, he has managed to stay positive and leave the past behind him.
However, he did hit another linesperson with a ball in his fourth round match—though it was not remotely his fault as it happened due to a ricochet off his frame.
"My gosh, it was very awkward déjà vu," Djokovic said. "I'm actually trying to find the linesperson and see if he's okay because I saw he had a little bit of a bruise, like redness, in that place in the head where the ball hit him. I hope he's fine. I mean, he definitely dealt with it in a very strong and brave way. But it was a hit because I was very close."
The brief incident was perhaps the only nerve-wrecking moment Djokovic has endured during his seamless fortnight.
"It has happened to me and to many other players in the last 15 years that I've been on the tour," he said. "I've seen it a lot when the ball ricochets from the racquet and the frame, hits someone in the stands, or someone that is close to you or line umpire."
The world No. 1 will look to continue his dominating clay-court run, and will next face Pablo Carreno Busta, the same player who benefited from his default in New York.
