Positive I.D.
NBA coaching legend Phil Jackson (Chicago Bulls and L.A. Lakers) has been a highly visible presence here. It seems like heâ??s the real deal as a fan, not just another celebrity wasting the choice real estate in some luxury box that would be put to better use hosting the butt of someone who actually knew what he or she was watching.
My buddy and fellow scribe L. Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated saw Phil stake out an obscure back court and flop down in the front seat of the bleachers to watch the Bryan brothers in action. He was into it. I can just see the guy who may be the greatest of all basketball coaches (and who helped Michael Jordan become an American icon) hunched over, cracking his knuckles and feverishly whispering, â??Come on, Bob, get tough!â? or â??Letâ??s go, Mike. Do it right here!â? Jon tells me that Phil and Andy Roddick also are buddies.
**Ask the Experts:**Shortly before Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova squared off yesterday, I bumped into the founding mother of Russian womenâ??s tennis, Olga Morozova. I asked her to make a gut call on the match, just for fun. She said, â??Unless Serena serves big, Masha (the Russian diminutive for Maria) wins, two and three.â?
â??Nuff said.
