Power Couple?

It looks like the recent spate of stories heralding Andy Roddick’s commitment to improving his return game were accurate. Note the money quote in this game story moved by the BBC following Roddick’s win over Wesley Moodie at the Australian Open:

Now if you actually read the whole story like good boys and girls, you’ll note Andy’s reference to TLC at the very end. The rumors filtering out of Melbourne are almost enough to make you wonder if Maria Sharapova is good at giving foot rubs. On the other hand, if you’ve ever seen a hard-working tennis player’s dogs, you’ll know why some things are too much to ask, even from someone who may be in love with you.

If the Roddick-Sharapova liason is real, it’s going to be a fun thing for tennis. Why not? Isn’t it about time we revisited the glory days of Jimmy and Chrissie? Bjorn and Marianna? Martina and Magnus? Martina and Justin? Martina and. . . well, you get the point.

Andy and Maria would be two-person buzz machine, a formidable power couple that would help tennis shake this growing reputation it has as the unofficial escort service for every actress, celebutante and Hollywood insider looking for a little love - and publicity.

I probably shouldn’t admit this, but another part of me likes the Andy and Maria idea because it’s bound to drive a certain kind of bore (you know who I mean: the type who’s so adamant to stay out of the dreaded mainstream – heavens, that’s where regular people are! – that he can’t appreciate success, or a winner) mad with disgust and wincing cynicism.
