Quote of the Day: Camila Giorgi’s refreshingly honest self-assessment

The Italian is never one to hold back on the tennis court. And after bowing out of Roland Garros in the fourth round, she held nothing back in the press room either.

When Camila Giorgi is on, players can feel it. The Italian’s high-octane, ultra-aggressive game leaves little room for error, and she has wreaked havoc on the Roland Garros draw during a fortnight of upsets in the women’s draw.

The 30-year-old fought past Zhang Shuai and Yulia Putintseva in the opening rounds before causing a major upset, sending No. 7 seed Aryna Sabalenka crashing out with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.

But when Giorgi isn’t on? Well, that's when everything goes a bit sideways for the Italian.

On Monday, No. 28 seed bowed out of Roland Garros in the fourth round—her best Grand Slam result since her 2018 Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance. After her 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Daria Kasatkina, Giorgi was asked to assess her performance:

Q. How would you summarize your game today? Because I think you made something like 37 unforced errors.

CAMILA GIORGI: (Laughing) This is me.

The Italian indeed struck 37 unforced errors in two sets—but to her credit, she hit 29 winners too. But it wouldn’t be enough to halt the crafty Kasatkina, who outpaced her with 16 winners and 10 unforced errors during their meeting on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

But Giorgi took it all in stride:

“Not a great game… What can I say?” Giorgi said. “There is that statistic, so I cannot say anything, right? But I think today it was [just] like this. It was two opposite games. Me, I was trying always to push, to play the game and she is totally different.

“But today [my game] didn't work. The other days, yes, and we can see the difference.”
