Ranking Reaction: Caroline Dolehide breaks into Top 50, Sofia Kenin jumps back into Top 40
Also, Taylor Townsend is back in the Top 100 for the first time as a mom, Taylor Fritz spends his 50th career week in the Top 10 and Liam Broady makes his Top 100 debut.
“I would say that this is the biggest career singles week of my life,” said Caroline Dolehide after reaching the final in Guadalajara last week. And it was true—prior to Guadalajara her best singles results had been two WTA quarterfinals, both at WTA 250 events, in Quebec City in 2017 and in Monterrey earlier this year. She had never been higher than No. 99 on the WTA rankings, either.
With one monster of a week, that’s all out the window.
After reaching the first WTA final of her career at the WTA 1000 event, Dolehide soars from No. 111 to No. 42 on the new WTA rankings today, shattering her previous career-high by 57 spots and making her Top 50 debut from all the way outside the Top 100.
“I feel really proud of myself,” the 25-year-old American said, “proud of the work that I’ve put in, proud of the work that my team has put in—as hard as I work, they work, so it’s a team effort.”
Dolehide isn't the only American making a big jump into the Top 50, as Sofia Kenin rises from No. 53 to No. 31 this week after reaching the semifinals in Guadalajara, where she fell to Dolehide.
Kenin, a former No. 4, has now cut two thirds of her ranking off in just two weeks—she rose from No. 93 to No. 53 last week after reaching the final of the WTA 500 event in San Diego.
The American is now at her highest ranking since she was ranked No. 13 during the two weeks of the 2022 Australian Open.
It's also a big ranking week for two more Americans (and Taylors).
After a third-round showing in Guadalajara, Taylor Townsend rises from No. 101 to No. 89, her first time back in the singles Top 100 as a mom. After 19 months in maternity leave, Townsend returned to action in April 2022 ranked No. 483, and now—17 months later—she’s back in the Top 100. She's already in the Top 10 in doubles.
And Taylor Fritz, who recorded his milestone 50th win of the year at the Laver Cup over the weekend with a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory over Andrey Rublev, kicks off his 50th career week in the Top 10 today.
Fritz first cracked the Top 10 on October 10, 2022 and has now spent 50 of the 51 weeks since then in the elite (he dipped to No. 11 for one week from October 31 to November 6 but bounced right back in).
The ATP rankings were updated on Tuesday after ATP 250 events in Chengdu and Zhuhai had Tuesday finals, and there was one very notable breakthrough—Great Britain's Liam Broady, a former world No. 2 and two-time Grand Slam doubles champion in the juniors, breaks into the ATP Top 100 for the first time, rising from No. 103 to No. 93 after reaching the final of a Challenger in Saint-Tropez.
The 29-year-old has been making major strides lately, highlighted by recording the first Top 10 win of his career at Wimbledon over the summer, defeating then-No. 4 Casper Ruud in the second round.
In addition to his successes on the main tour this year, Broady has been tearing it up on the Challenger tour with one title, another two finals and three semifinals. The title came in Vilnius in February.
