Iga Swiatek and her 35-match win streak will not return until Wimbledon after the WTA world No. 1 pulled out from Berlin to prioritize her health for the grass-court major.
Scheduled to play next week’s WTA 500 event in the German capital, Swiatek shared on her social media, “Due to a recurrent discomfort I am feeling in my shoulder, unfortunately I need to withdraw from the bett1open in Berlin. I'm sorry I will not be able to play there.
“I will focus on recovery and rest in order to be ready for Wimbledon.”
A former junior champion at SW19, Swiatek made her first trip to the round of 16 last year before being stopped by Ons Jabeur. The 21-year-old is seeking her first title on the surface, with all of her past tour-level finals coming on clay and hard courts.
Swiatek joins second-ranked Anett Kontaveit, third-ranked Paula Badosa, eighth-ranked Jessica Pegula and ninth-ranked Danielle Collins in withdrawing. Fellow Top 10 players Jabeur, Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka and Karolina Pliskova are projected to be the Top 4 seeds.
