Roger Federer will not have a retirement ceremony at his hometown event in Basel in two weeks, saying it is "too soon" following his emotional send-off at the Laver Cup in London.

The 41-year-old had been originally scheduled to play the ATP 500 event but, having announced a few weeks ago that he had decided to retire from competition, was to have been honored at the tournament instead.

"I thank the Swiss-Indoors for their willingness to welcome me in Basel this year," Federer was quoted by Tages Anzeiger as saying in a statement. "I have been trying to process everything that's happened recently. The celebration in Basel at home will have a very special meaning, and now is too soon for me following London."

The tournament indicates it could still happen further down the road.

"We would have liked to have celebrated Roger's years of success at our tournament, but understand that Roger needs more time," said tournament director Roger Brennwald.

Basel is being played again this season following a two-year break caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The field includes Carlos Alcaraz and Nick Kyrgios.
