Serena covers "I touch Myself" for breast cancer checks

October means Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and with that at hand, tennis GOAT and noted cover-song belter Serena Williams shares a brief new clip in which she takes on the Divinyls' hit "I Touch Myself."

#ITouchMyselfProject

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month I’ve recorded a version of The Divinyls global hit “I Touch Myself” to remind women to self-check regularly. Yes, this put me out of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do it because it’s an issue that affects all women of all colors, all around the world. Early detection is key - it saves so many lives. I just hope this helps to remind women of that. The music video is part of the I Touch Myself Project which was created in honor of celebrated diva, Chrissy Amphlett, who passed away from breast cancer, and who gave us her hit song to remind women to put their health first. The project is proudly supported by Berlei for Breast Cancer Network Australia. Visit berlei.com.au/TheChrissy to find out more. #ITouchMyselfProject #BerleiAus #BCNA #DoItForYourself

The fleeting performance is AutoTuned, to be sure, but the coverage arrives more than warranted. Divinyls diva Chrissy Amphlett died in 2013 due to breast cancer, and Williams and one of her sponsors, Berlei, are co-conspiring with Breast Cancer Network Australia to shine a light on the disease via I Touch Myself campaign.

"Think I would die, if you were to ignore me," Williams sings, almost chillingly, as the recording concludes. A namesake brassiere, the Chrissy, accompanies the mini–cover tune—a snake-skin undergarment with "I Touch Myself" stitched inside it, a welcome reminder to all women who don it to regularly receive mammograms—and to practice self-checks to boot.

After appearing in Beyoncé's music video for radio hit "Sorry" and documenting her own karaoke forays aplenty, Williams here uses her love of song for good in a different way. For the first time, her singing gets serious. Advantage: women's health.
