Serena, Gauff react to USA's historic World Cup win

While the Wimbledon courts were resting on the customary Middle Sunday, the sporting event that dominated the consciousness instead was taking place over in Lyon, France, where the U.S. women's soccer team won its second consecutive World Cup, defeating the Netherlands, 2-0.

The championship marked a record-extending fourth title in just eight editions of the women's tournament, and it did not go unnoticed by the tennis world—including by Coco Gauff, who tweeted about it and shared an Instagram story featuring the Drake song "Back To Back."

Shelby Rogers warmly congratulated the team, too:

And Serena Williams' daughter, Olympia Ohanian, did her own celebration—while dressed for the occasion:

Even Serena herself chimed in, but more significantly, she amplified Billie Jean King's call for the women's team to receive the same pay opportunities as the men.

For winning this year's World Cup, the U.S. women will split $4 million in FIFA prize money. At the men's tournament last year, the champion French team shared $38 million, 9.5 times as much.

Meanwhile, there is the ongoing legal battle over how the women's team's labor agreement with U.S. Soccer differs from the men's.

The US Open was the first tennis Grand Slam to have equal prize money for men and women, in 1973. Wimbledon, in 2007, was the last. We've come a long way, baby. But history continues to be written.
